The Long March
In Their Own Words
‘The Long March In Their Own Words’ Book 2 in the Lamsdorf Series In January 1945 the Germans began to evacuate Allied prisoners-of-war from Stalag 344 Lamsdorf, and its Working Parties, and other camps too, away from the Soviet forces advancing from the east. So began the Long March. Some of these unfortunate POWs kept diaries during the March, and some wrote accounts afterwards. These are first-hand accounts of their experiences during those terrible months until liberation in April or May 1945, authentic descriptions of what actually happened from the time that they left those camps until those who survived finally arrived home, months later. You will read some harrowing accounts of what the men had to suffer, and how many of their comrades died; but also stories of great courage, determination and resourcefulness, as well as a surprising amount of fairness in how they judged their captors and other German people whom they encountered.
