THE CYNUIT FACTOR
THINKING ABOUT THE BATTLE OF EDINGTON 878AD (OR ETHANDUN - OR EÞANDUNE) AND THE BEGINNING OF ENGLAND
The author and his brothers and sisters have walked many battlefields - arguing what they would have done if they had been there on the day. When they came to the Battle of Edington 877AD, they realised that it is controversial. They noticed that there was no certainty where the Battle took place. Contenders are in Somerset and in Wiltshire. As they explored further they discovered that the sources refer to a little known fight a few weeks before the battle. The fight was between a raiding group of Alfred's men, and most of the Danish force. It took place at Cynuit. Alfred's men prevailed and killed the Danish leader. King Alfred began the work of uniting the people, and won a critically important victory: his offspring went on with the work of uniting the country. And they gave us the boroughs, and hare-paths. This was the beginning of England. So the book is an account of the events around this significant Battle. Inviting the reader to wonder what they would have done - and where the events took place.
