Douglas Jeal is an English sculptor engaged in ways in which we communicate ideas through the exploration of light, place, colour and form. In this book, written in collaboration with writer and designer Linda Rushby, he talks about his life and a career which has taken him from post-war Croydon, via St Martin's College of Art in Sixties London, to a long teaching career at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. En route, he has travelled throughout Europe, the USA and Mexico, converted a disused church in the Lincolnshire Fens, been a Fulbright Scholar, contributed to the debate on public art and met many of the luminaries of late 20th century art. A natural raconteur, his stories, sometimes hilarious and sometimes heart-breaking, describe his experiences as one of the first generation of working class students exposed to the 'Art School' scene; capture the atmosphere and excitement of making art in the second half of the 20th century and beyond; and give a fascinating insight into the creative process.
