Revealing, transforming, and display in Egyptian hieroglyphs
This is the first synthesis on Egyptian enigmatic writing in the New Kingdom (c.1550-1070 BCE). Enigmatic writing (also referred to as "cryptography") comprises various extended practices of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing that are set against immediate decoding and towards foregrounding the iconicity inherent in hieroglyphic writing, revealing additional levels of meaning, and inviting a more absorbed engagement by the beholder or reader. This first volume consists of studies by the main specialists in the field. The second volume is a lexicon of all attested enigmatic signs and values.
