For English please see below Tijdens de recente Biënnale van Venetië 2018 ontving de Engelse architect, historicus, criticus en pedagoog Kenneth Frampton de Gouden Leeuw, de Lifetime Achievement Award van de Biënnale. Er bestaat geen enkele architectuurstudent die nog nooit van het boek Modern Architecture: A Critical History (1980) van deze beroemde historicus of van zijn essay ‘Towards a Critical Regionalism, Six Points of an Architecture of Resistance’ (1983) heeft gehoord. In de laatste tekst zoekt Frampton naar een alternatieve benadering van de architectuur door specifieke kenmerken betreffende topografie, klimaat, licht en tektoniek als essentieel voor de kunst van het bouwen aan te merken. In dit nummer van OASE wordt de canonieke rol van Kenneth Frampton’s ‘kritische regionalisme’ onderzocht op een manier die verder reikt dan de traditionele interpretatie van dat concept. Er zijn bijdragen verzameld die een nieuwe genealogie van de tekst voorstellen, kritische herlezingen en verkenningen door praktiserende architecten en architectuurtheoretici die de interesse van Frampton’s ideeën voor hedendaagse architectuur evalueren. -- The English architect, historian, critic and educator Kenneth Frampton received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the latest Venice Biennale 2018. There is no architecture student that is not familiar with the book Modern Architecture: A Critical History (1980) of this renowned historian, nor with his essay ‘Towards a Critical Regionalism, Six Points of an Architecture of Resistance’ (1983). In this last text, Frampton searched for an alternative approach towards architecture by defining the specifics of topography, climate, light and tectonics as essential to the art of building. This issue of OASE examines the canonical role of Kenneth Frampton’s concept of ‘Critical Regionalism’, reaching beyond its traditional interpretation. It gathers contributions that propose a new genealogy of the text, critical re-readings and explorations by practicing architects and architecture theorists that evaluate the interest of Frampton’s ideas for contemporary architecture.
